Ironbog, a Great Idaho Hike

Posted on 17 Jul 2011 In: Cool Stuff

Not far from Arco, Idaho is the mountain lake called Ironbog. It is about an hour and a half drive from Idaho Falls, Idaho. Go west on the Arco highway 93 and stay on the road towards Macky, Idaho. It is a nice drive. Turn off the main road onto 23 miles southwest on Antelope Creek Road, Forest Road 135 and Forest Road 137. It is about a thirty minute drive from the main road to the trail head. Park your car and head up the trail. It is a bit steep right at first but then levels out to become a very pleasant trail. This is a trail that some people ride their horses on though it is narrow in places. It is about one and a half miles back in to the lake. The lake is fed by the melting snow on the mountains and the water is very cold. I have seen snow remaining on the side of the mountain right up to the edge of the lake into July.

The fishing is really good on the lake and there are several great places to pitch a tent for an overnight campout. There is a large rock that some youth like to jump from for a swim. The mosquitoes can be heavy and big so be sure to take along some DEET. The thing that is great about Idaho is that you only have to go a little ways to get away from civilization.

Obama Announces Sending Jobs Act to Congress

Posted on 16 Jul 2011 In: Cool Stuff

THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody, have a seat, on this beautiful morning. It’s wonderful to see all of you here.

On Thursday, I told Congress that I’ll be sending them a bill called the American Jobs Act. Well, here it is. (Applause.) This is a bill that will put people back to work all across the country. This is the bill that will help our economy in a moment of national crisis. This is a bill that is based on ideas from both Democrats and Republicans. And this is the bill that Congress needs to pass. No games. No politics. No delays. I’m sending this bill to Congress today, and they ought to pass it immediately. (Applause.)

Standing with me this morning are men and women who will be helped by the American Jobs Act. I’m standing with teachers. All across America, teachers are being laid off in droves — which is unfair to our kids, it undermines our future, and it is exactly what we shouldn’t be doing if we want our kids to be college-ready and then prepared for the jobs of the 21st century. We’ve got to get our teachers back to work. (Applause.) Let’s pass this bill and put them in the classroom where they belong. (Applause.)

I’m standing here with veterans. We’ve got hundreds of thousands of brave, skilled Americans who fought for this country. The last thing they should have to do is to fight for a job when they come home. So let’s pass this bill and put the men and women who served this nation back to work. (Applause.)

We’re standing here with cops and firefighters whose jobs are threatened because states and communities are cutting back. This bill will keep cops on the beat, and firefighters on call. So let’s pass this bill so that these men and women can continue protecting our neighborhoods like they do every single day. (Applause.)

I’m standing with construction workers. We’ve got roads that need work all over the country. Our highways are backed up with traffic. Our airports are clogged. And there are millions of unemployed construction workers who could rebuild them. So let’s pass this bill so road crews and diggers and pavers and workers — they can all head back to the jobsite. There’s plenty of work to do. This job — this jobs bill will help them do it. Let’s put them back to work. Let’s pass this bill rebuilding America. (Applause.)

And there are schools throughout the country that desperately need renovating. (Applause.) We cannot — got an “Amen” over there. (Laughter and applause.) We can’t expect our kids to do their best in places that are literally falling apart. This is America. Every kid deserves a great school — and we can give it to them. Pass this bill and we put construction crews back to work across the country repairing and modernizing at least 35,000 schools.

I’m standing here with small business owners. They know that while corporate profits have come roaring back, a lot of small businesses haven’t. They’re still struggling — getting the capital they need, getting the support they need in order to grow. So this bill cuts taxes for small businesses that hire new employees and for small businesses that raise salaries for current employees. It cuts your payroll tax in half. And all businesses can write off investments they make this year and next year. (Applause.) Instead of just talking about America’s job creators, let’s actually do something for America’s job creators. We can do that by passing this bill. (Applause.)

Now, there are a lot of other ways that this jobs bill, the American Jobs Act, will help this economy. It’s got a $ 4,000 tax credit for companies that hire anybody who spent more than six months looking for a job. We’ve got to do more for folks who’ve been hitting the pavement every single day looking for work, but haven’t found employment yet. That’s why we need to extend unemployment insurance and connect people to temporary work to help upgrade their skills.

This bill will help hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people find summer jobs next year — jobs that will help set the direction for their entire lives. And the American Jobs Act would prevent taxes from going up for middle-class families. If Congress does not act, just about every family in America will pay more taxes next year. And that would be a self-inflicted wound that our economy just can’t afford right now. So let’s pass this bill and give the typical working family a $ 1,500 tax cut instead. (Applause.)

And the American Jobs Act is not going to add to the debt — it’s fully paid for. I want to repeat that. It is fully paid for. (Laughter.) It’s not going to add a dime to the deficit. Next week, I’m laying out my plan not only to pay for this jobs bill but also to bring down the deficit further. It’s a plan that lives by the same rules that families do: We’ve got to cut out things that we can’t afford to do in order to afford the things that we really need. It’s a plan that says everybody — including the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations — have to pay their fair share. (Applause.)

The bottom line is, when it comes to strengthening the economy and balancing our books, we’ve got to decide what our priorities are. Do we keep tax loopholes for oil companies — or do we put teachers back to work? Should we keep tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires — or should we invest in education and technology and infrastructure, all the things that are going to help us out-innovate and out-educate and out-build other countries in the future?

We know what’s right. We know what will help businesses start right here and stay here and hire here. We know that if we take the steps outlined in this jobs plan, that there’s no reason why we can’t be selling more goods all around the world that are stamped with those three words: “Made in America.” That’s what we need to do to create jobs right now. (Applause.)

I have to repeat something I said in my speech on Thursday. There are some in Washington who’d rather settle our differences through politics and the elections than try to resolve them now. In fact, Joe and I, as we were walking out here, we were looking at one of the Washington newspapers and it was quoting a Republican aide saying, “I don’t know why* we’d want to cooperate with Obama right now. It’s not good for our politics.” That was very explicit.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: It was.

THE PRESIDENT: I mean, that’s the attitude in this town — “yeah, we’ve been through these things before, but I don’t know why we’d be for them right now.” The fact of the matter is the next election is 14 months away. And the American people don’t have the luxury of waiting 14 months for Congress to take action. (Applause.) Folks are living week to week, paycheck to paycheck. They need action. And the notion that there are folks who would say, we’re not going to try to do what’s right for the American people because we don’t think it’s convenient for our politics — we’ve been seeing that too much around here. And that’s exactly what folks are tired of.

And that’s okay, when things are going well, you play politics. It’s not okay at a time of great urgency and need all across the country. These aren’t games we’re playing out here. Folks are out of work. Businesses are having trouble staying open. You’ve got a world economy that is full of uncertainty right now — in Europe, in the Middle East. Some events may be beyond our control, but this is something we can control. Whether we not — whether or not we pass this bill, whether or not we get this done, that’s something that we can control. That’s in our hands.

You hear a lot of folks talking about uncertainty in the economy. This is a bit of uncertainty that we could avoid by going ahead and taking action to make sure that we’re helping the American people.

So if you agree with me, if you want Congress to take action, then I’m going to need everybody here and everybody watching — you’ve got to make sure that your voices are heard. Help make the case. There’s no reason not to pass this bill. Its ideas are bipartisan. Its ideas are common sense. It will make a difference. That’s not just my opinion; independent economists and validators have said this could add a significant amount to our Gross Domestic Product, and could put people back to work all across the country. (Applause.) So the only thing that’s stopping it is politics. (Applause.) And we can’t afford these same political games. Not now.

So I want you to pick up the phone. I want you to send an email. Use one of those airplane skywriters. (Laughter.) Dust off the fax machine. (Laughter.) Or you can just, like, write a letter. (Laughter.) So long as you get the message to Congress: Send me the American Jobs Act so I can sign it into law. Let’s get something done. Let’s put this country back to work.

Thank you very much, everybody. God bless you. (Applause.)

How the United States Borrows Money

Posted on 15 Jul 2011 In: Cool Stuff

When the United States needs to borrow money, government officials do not stop in at the nearest bank to negotiate a loan. Instead, a little-known agency called the Bureau of the Public Trust holds auctions for the sale of bonds and notes, and U.S. Savings Bonds. In general terms, these securities are known as Treasuries.

There are several different types of Treasuries, with maturity dates ranging from two weeks to more than ten years. They are not sold at their face value, but rather are discounted by the government depending on the amount of interest they will earn over time. So a T-bill with a face value of $ 100 might be sold for $ 80 by the government. When it matures, the government will buy it back for the full $ 100. In addition, the Federal government makes interest payments on these “loans” every six months.

The History of U.S. Debt

“The United States debt, foreign and domestic, was the price of liberty.” Alexander Hamilton, writing in 1790 in a document called the “First Report on the Public Credit”, laid out the reasons for, and the use of, the U.S. debt. According to Hamilton, the money should be used to establish the country’s reputation for meeting its responsibilities by promptly paying its debt. Money raised would be used to promote justice, to restore property values, and to support the development of new agricultural and commercial resources. In addition, the money would be spent on establishing “public order” and to defend the fledgling nation against enemies.

Why Do Children Lie?

Posted on 12 Jul 2011 In: Cool Stuff

Most children lie at a certain point in childhood. They cannot differentiate right from wrong and somehow start to believe that lying is more effective than truth. A child develops personality traits, observing the environment around him. Don’t be in denial if you notice your child is lying. Children can start lying at any age. However, what matters is that, at what age do they deliberately start lying. Child psychologists suggest that this age is generally around 4 to 6 years.

The problem is that you cannot really tell if your child is lying unless you catch him/her red-handed or have discovered the truth. But, since you are reading this article, I am guessing you already have. Now you must wonder, why do children lie? What could possibly make a young little child lie about trivial things in life? Well, you just said it. Children are very impressionable at their age. But, you should not pass it off thinking he/she is just being creative. They have started lying now and if not stopped, they will become compulsive liars later and it will really become hard to tell if they are lying. There could be several reasons why children lie that you may have absolutely neglected. Pay attention to these points and understand what makes children lie.

Reasons Why Kids Lie

Imitating Parents: Have you often caught yourself telling your child, “Don’t tell your mom/dad about this”, or blatantly asked them to lie to someone you wanted to avoid like attending a call and telling the caller that you are not around. You may have never thought that such a simple thing could affect your child’s psychology adversely. This is the point where children notice their parents doing something wrong which they have been taught is bad, like lying. But, they start copying their parents habits because parents are role-models for children. So, when parents lie around kids, they start doing it too.

Truth Got Them Into Hot Water: Did you ever punish your kid when he/she admitted to having broken the vase, eating all the pies or not doing their homework? You are unknowingly negatively conditioning them and they become scared of telling you the truth. Their innocent and young minds start perceiving truth as something that will get them into trouble so they start lying to not get into trouble. It is their defense mechanism. They start lying because when they lie, you become happy because you are not aware of the truth and you don’t punish them. You might even end up rewarding them.

Filling the Gaps: When your kids interact with other children who brag about say – eating two scoops of chocolate-chip ice cream, buying a new home theater system or a vacation to Hawaii, your kids start feeling inadequate and inferior around their playmates. So, to get more competitive, they start exaggerating about incidents, making up stories and lie about accomplishments in their own family tree. They want to impress other kids around them and pretend to have the best life among them to make them feel jealous. It also helps them to make themselves feel better about them. This is pure innocence and again a result of their psychological defense mechanism.

They Don’t Remember: Quite possibly, your child does not remember something and denies doing anything. You may think that your child is lying but they really are not. It may be about finishing their homework or eating a pie. In their minds, they believe to have done or not done something and they respond accordingly. Understand if your child is doing it purposely or if they have really forgotten about things.

What Should You As Parents Do?

  • A young mind is very susceptible to the events in its surroundings. Now that you know, why do children lie, make sure you set a right example in front of them to follow. Practice what you preach. Don’t lie, especially when your kids are around. Keep them out of it.
  • When you realize that your kid has been lying lately, have a talk with them. Don’t scold them for it. You must tell them that it is a very bad behavior on their part to lie to anyone. Tell them the consequences of lying a lot with a story like that of the shepherd and the wolf.
  • If your children lie a lot even after telling them not to, you can punish by not talking to them, not taking them out on the weekend or not letting them have any play time. They will soon understand that what they did was wrong and won’t do it again.
  • Encourage your children to read short stories that build their morals and ethics. They will help your child build a strong character when they grow up by subtly teaching them about good and bad.
  • Encourage your children to speak the truth and appreciate them for being brave.
  • Control television viewing. Children also pick up about lying from television shows, even the cartoons meant for kids. You must keep a watch at what your kid is watching and let TV time be only in your presence. You wouldn’t like it if your child started learning things that were out of your control and then behaved badly.
  • Don’t have too high expectations from your children. When you compare your child to other children, he/she subconsciously has a fear of disappointing you. When they do disappoint, they start lying to hide their flaws. Make your child feel comfortable to share things with you so you can give him/her your full support to improve upon those problems.
  • Talk to your children about them lying to their friends about material possessions. This is not a good sign because they will grow up to become one of those people who only care about money. You need to make your kid understand that they should be grateful to God for what they have and strive to achieve what they don’t have. They will learn to value things and be proud of them.
  • Although this is an extreme step, but when you have been unsuccessful at getting your kid to stop lying, you can take them to a counselor. Preferably talk to the school counselor about your child’s behavior. If your kid is shy about talking to you, they may open up to another elder who is willing to help them out.

The initial years are the time you can help promote emotional intelligence in children. You must pay special attention towards their behavior because more often they tend to develop negative attitude out of neglect. You should be very gentle with your children unless a situation demands otherwise. By age 7, your child will hardly be scared of lying to you and will use it as a tactic in social interactions to avoid threat. You can instill the values of honesty in your children right from the age of 2-3 years old. Their perceptions start to form as they are introduced to the society. Although, you cannot avoid your children from learning about the concept of lies, you can certainly prevent them from adopting it and losing their innocence.

Important Works of Shakespeare

Posted on 8 Jul 2011 In: Cool Stuff

I was truly honored to have got a chance to watch a performance of the Shakespearean classic, Macbeth, by the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. I cannot stop talking about the experience, it made my hair stand on end. Reading his work no doubt is valuable and you’re sure to be impressed with the quality of his flow in language but, to see it live on the stage was an amazing experience all together. It took a couple of hours to actually register the whole experience. Awed by the whole experience and as a tribute to the legend here is an article that includes important works of Shakespeare and their impact on literature.

Sir William Shakespeare is undoubtedly the world’s greatest poet and dramatist. He influenced the writers of every generation and still continues to do so. The ability to summarize the range of emotions through his writing is eloquent and this perhaps is the reason for his popularity. He mastered the art of narrating a story in a way that one could easily relate to and in fact the characters, themes and situations still ring true in the modern times. His stories included everything – comedy, melodrama, adventure, romance, sex, scandal, violence, betrayal and even fairy tales. Even the lightest of his plays included all the elements mentioned above. His imagination knew no bounds and he made sure his every audience lived or connected to the same. Every character invented by him had a distinct element which made them immortal. It is amazing how he shaped his every character exactly understanding the psyche of human, even before the science of psychology was developed.

Instead of saying The Bard’s command over the language was immense, it would only be right if I say he enriched the English language to a greater extent. He is credited with introducing more than thousands words into the language, such has been the impact of his works on literature. He created words by changing nouns into verbs, verbs into adjectives, adding prefixes and coining words that are wholly original, which have become common expressions of communication today. Shakespeare’s words keep people of all kinds and from all places bonded together. If I say “star-crossed lovers” in context to something, a person reading it in any other part of the world knows what I mean. His work gives something that is in common to all and allows us to share a common culture in spite of belonging to different countries and traditions. The cultural impact due to his work still continues, centuries after he has gone.

Shakespeare gave us the greatest love stories of all times. He understood the heart of humans and had an ability to paint landscapes and compelling characters that has being an enduring symbol of romanticism. His love sonnets are still and forever will be great inspirations for young lovers. “Sonnet 18- Shall I compare thee to a summers day?” is one of the best I ever read. The sonnets have the ability to paint a thousand images in your mind’s eyes. They’re so intensely personal that you would instantly connect to it. Reading these sonnets truly offers the universal treatment of love in the English language.

Apart from the 154 sonnets dealing with themes such as loneliness, mortality, beauty, love and tragedy, some of the most important works of William Shakespeare include his world renowned plays. Given below is a list of the same, in the order they were written. The plays have been classified into three genres (tragedy, comedy and historical), with the mention of the main characters in each of them.

The Winter’s Tale 1612 Comedy Leonates, Perdita “You pay a great deal too dear for what’s given freely”

I am truly awed by his personality and people who have read Shakespeare’s work or seen it will know what I am talking about. He truly was great in act as he was in thoughts. Let us say not in grief, he is no more, because, All that lives must die, passing through nature to eternity… where Shakespeare in all ways is and will continue to inspire and remain immortal in our hearts. A grand salute to the depth of life He lived.

The Associated Press

CAIRO — Egypt’s tourism minister said Sunday that officials have canceled a proposal requiring tourists and other visitors to apply for visas before arrival in the country.

Monier Fakhri Abdel Nour told the official Middle East News Agency that he informed the Cabinet that “local and outside reactions indicated that issuing such a decision would have severe negative repercussions on the tourism movement in Egypt.”

Abdel Nour said the Cabinet had not issued any decision regarding the new rules, calling it only a proposal. He did not say who proposed the new measures.

Earlier, MENA quoted Deputy Tourism Minister Hesham Zazou as saying the Cabinet froze the decision.

The measure would have required tourists and other visitors to apply for visas in advance from an Egyptian embassy abroad instead of buying one upon arrival. It would not apply to tourists traveling in groups.

The proposed new rules would have included nationals from the United States, Europe, Australia, Gulf countries, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Tourism is a pillar of Egypt’s economy and has been badly hurt by the unrest that began with the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in February.

Some time back, a local church asserted that a school in my community was providing “outcome-based education” – a bugaboo for many – and was said to be organizing a public protest.

School officials quickly scheduled a parent meeting, and during the discussion, an official said something like, “They think we have OBE because we use cross-pollinated peer facilitative instruction.” In my characteristically reserved fashion, I spouted, “Now just what the heck does that mean?”

He bristled. “It means students help one another learn.”

My reply? “Then why the Sam Hill don’t you just say that?” Never missing an opportunity to do some educating of my own, I explained that jargon only confuses people, and when people don’t understand it, they create their own meanings – rarely positive ones.

What does this have to do with business? Too many companies waste time and ad space talking to themselves. They may not intend to leave us out of the conversation, but they do a pretty good job of it.

Point A to Point B. The objective of marketing communications is usually to convey information from a company to an audience of some sort. Could be a prospect, a customer, an employee – maybe even Wall Street.

To make that connection, the information must be relevant and understandable. It doesn’t hurt if it’s interesting or entertaining, too. Sound like common sense? I agree. So why do so many companies fall short? I believe the biggest problem is that many decision-makers are more worried about their peers’ and bosses’ opinions then they are about communicating with the real audiences.

President Obama sent Congress the legislative fine print of his American Jobs Act Monday, suggesting that his proposed new stimulus to help the economy would not increase deficits as long as lawmakers approve the tax changes he also outlined in his bill.

In doing something he has rarely done since 2009 — that is, sending Congress a major bill he conceived — Obama has forged what he hopes will be both a weapon and a shield.

Politically, with his public approval slipping, sending a 155-page bill to Congress allows the president to shift blame to lawmakers, particularly House Republicans, if Washington takes no action. By arguing, as he did Monday, that middle-class-oriented tax cuts and new spending should be offset by tax hikes on wealthy Americans and corporations, the president thinks he can weaken GOP confidence that raising taxes of any kind will always harm economic growth.

“Either Congress gets it done, or people will know exactly what’s happening to hold it up,” Obama said at the White House at an evening event. He dropped in as a surprise salesman at a gathering of sympathetic African-American activists and journalists assembled to hear more about the president’s jobs plan from senior Obama aides.

The White House has turned Obama’s “Pass This Bill” project into a campaign, filling email inboxes with endorsements of the bill, trotting out citizens to showcase who might benefit, and sending the president to key swing states to challenge House and Senate Republicans in front of their constituents. The president is asking his audiences to contact their lawmakers to support his bill.

On Tuesday, Obama will be in Ohio, the home state of House Speaker John Boehner, to describe how his plan could refurbish blighted schools and put idled construction trades to work. In Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Wednesday, he will talk about how small businesses would gain if his measure becomes law.

“This is the bill that Congress needs to pass. No games. No politics. No delays,” the president said during a speech Monday in the Rose Garden. “I’m sending this bill to Congress today, and they ought to pass it immediately.”

The president’s “no politics” warning was undercut a tad by the fact that he stood before a backdrop of 27 they-look-like-America men and women introduced as teachers, construction workers, law enforcement officers, small business owners, and first responders. Some wore uniforms, and all remained silent except for occasional applause.

Seated in the garden were representatives of organizations that support the president and his initiatives, including the Hispanic Federation, the American Association of University Women, and the grass-roots group OWL (Older Women’s League), representing women at midlife and beyond.
