While many use the term “Ivy League” as a colloquialism referring to highly regarded private universities with highly selective admissions processes, the Ivy League is actually an athletic conference – an athletic conference that just happens to be composed exclusively of some of the best schools in the world. With that distinction made, many people still lust after the Ivy League pedigree even if some schools are just as well regarded without actually being an Ivy League institution; MIT and Stanford come to mind.

The Ivy League consists of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, and Penn – all schools located in the northeast. What if you want to attend college in the south to be near your family or due to an aversion to cold climates? Well, there are plenty of world-renowned institutions of higher learning in the American south, and it just so happens that eight of them provide educational experiences and pedigrees that many would say are comparable to that of the “Ivy League.” While a few of the colleges on this list may not be traditionally as highly regarded, they are still considered well-respected substitutes for the eight schools of the Ivy League and a paper from one of these institutions will certainly never hold you back from your ambitious dreams. The term “Harvard of the South” is often associated with all eight of these elite southern colleges, but I prefer to call these colleges “the Magnolia League.”

The College of William & Mary

Founded in 1693, the College of William & Mary is the second oldest college in the United States, only Harvard is older. Adding to the school’s prestige factor is the fact that William & Mary counts three former United States Presidents among its alumni: Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler. The Virginia institution regularly ranks among the top five public universities in the country academically and the U.S. colonial history program is considered one of the tops in the nation.

Duke University

Duke is one of the most selective colleges in the country, with an undergraduate admission rate that is consistently lower than some of the Ivy League schools. The North Carolina school is regarded for its top-notch undergraduate education including its biomedical engineering program, in addition to phenomenal law, medical, and business schools. According to Forbes, Duke ranks 11th among universities for producing billionaires and is the top-ranked southern school for producing billionaires.

Emory University

Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the most selective universities in the country and hosts some of the academic world’s most respected faculty. The undergraduate program consistently hovers around the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, and the school’s biomedical engineering, public health, business, law, and nursing programs are widely regarded as some of the best in the nation.

Rice University

Rice is one of the most selective schools in the nation and as an undergrad institution consistently ranks with the Ivy League schools in terms of academic quality and rigor. The university is particularly well-regarded for its natural science and engineering programs, but all of its science programs frequently receive acclaim from the experts. While the uninitiated may associate Houston with nothing more than suburban sprawl, the Texas metropolis is actually home to the second largest theater district in the nation and a world-class museum district; the strong cultural development of downtown Houston and the city’s international flair only increase the Ivy League feel of this small, selective college.

Tulane University

Tulane is one of the many schools across the south that have been dubbed “the Harvard of the South” at some point, and while the school’s admission requirements are not as rigorous as the Ivy League schools, many of its programs are among the oldest in the nation with some being THE oldest in the south. Tulane was a pioneer in bringing focused programs in law, medicine, social work, public health, business and political economy to the deep south. Tulane’s Latin American studies, political economy, maritime law, environmental law, medical, biomedical engineering, energy trading, and finance programs are regarded as some of the nation’s finest.

University of Virginia

The University of Virginia, along with the College of William & Mary, has been considered a “public Ivy” since the term was coined in 1985, but UVA has been regarded as a prestigious institution of higher learning since its founding in 1819. That is to be expected from a school that counts former United States Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe among its first board members. The University of Virginia is largely considered to be the best or second best public university in the country and is particularly well-regarded for its law, architecture, literature, teaching, and psychology programs.

Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt is a highly selective university with some of the toughest admission standards in the country, as would be expected from a school that consistently offers one of the top 20 undergraduate programs in the nation. The school offers top programs in a wide array of academic disciplines spanning from the liberal arts to the hard sciences. Some of the most well-regarded programs at Vanderbilt include the school’s law, medical, management, Portuguese, Spanish, comparative literature, natural sciences and mathematics, pharmacology, and life and agricultural sciences.

Wake Forest University

Wake Forest University is a very selective private school, although admission is a bit less competitive than the majority of the “Southern Ivies.” Regardless of the slightly less competitive admission process, the school’s undergraduate division is regarded for its faculty and student engagement. Wake Forest’s law, medical, business management, and accounting programs are particularly well regarded.

Eight members of Congress on Thursday formally demanded that Google address a range of privacy concerns about its new wearable technology device, Google Glass.

News from the technology industry, including start-ups, the Internet, enterprise and gadgets.
On Twitter: @nytimesbits.

The letter, addressed to Larry Page, Google’s chief executive, outlined eight questions for Google and asked for a response by June 14.

“We are curious whether this new technology could infringe on the privacy of the average American,” the letter said. “Because Google Glass has not yet been released and we are uncertain of Google’s plans to incorporate privacy protections into the device, there are still a number of unanswered questions.”

The glasses, which are not yet for sale to the public, connect to the Internet and allow people to do things like take photographs, record and watch video, send text messages, post to social media sites and read text snippets. They have already raised privacy concerns on issues like unwanted recording.

The request, from the Bipartisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, came as Google held its annual I/O developers conference in San Francisco, where it showed off Glass, gave software developers information about how to build apps for the device and introduced seven new apps, including ones from Facebook, Twitter and CNN.

The group, for which Representative Joe Barton, Republican of Texas, is a co-chairman, asked questions including how Google would collect and store data from the devices, how it would ensure that it did not unintentionally collect private data, how Google would protect the privacy of people not using Glass when they are with people using it and whether the device would have facial recognition technology.

Steve Lee, director of product management for Google Glass, addressed the facial recognition question in a statement.

“We’ve consistently said that we won’t add new face recognition features to our services unless we have strong privacy protections in place,” he said.

Google has faced punishments over privacy violations with past products, including a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over a social networking tool and another one with 38 states over data collection during its Street View mapping project.

In a session at the conference, Mr. Lee addressed other concerns in the letter. Google followed all its privacy and data collection policies with Glass, he said, and built social cues into the device to help prevent certain privacy violations. For instance, users have to press a button or speak to Glass to take a photograph or record video, and look directly at whatever they are shooting.

Still, one developer said he had already built an app for Glass that enables users to take a photograph with a wink.

In a statement, Chris Dale, a Google spokesman, said, “We are thinking very carefully about how we design Glass because new technology always raises new issues.”

He added that Google was slowly selling early versions of the device, which cost $ 1,500, to people who sign up for them, “to ensure that our users become active participants in shaping the future of this technology.”

Sci/Tech – Google News

AT&T is planning to discontinue the HTC First, better known as the “Facebook Phone,” reports BGR. Released on April 12, the HTC First was touted as the first device to come with Facebook Home preinstalled, a feature that has not enticed buyers to purchase the phone.

Our source at AT&T has confirmed that the HTC First, which is the first smartphone to ship with Facebook Home pre-installed, will soon be discontinued and unsold inventory will be returned to HTC. How much unsold inventory is there? We don’t have an exact figure, but things aren’t looking good. According to our source, AT&T sold fewer than 15,000 units nationwide through last week when the phone’s price was slashed to $ 0.99.

When contacted, an AT&T spokesperson gave MacRumors the following statement in regards to BGR‘s report: “As mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.”

The Facebook Home software, which can be installed on a number of Android devices, has also proven to be unpopular with Android users. The app has a two star rating in the Google Play store and has seen just a million downloads since it was released last month.

home
Facebook is hoping to drive additional downloads with an upcoming software update, which was demoed last week at a small press event. The upgrades are intended to make Facebook Home less intrusive, reports the LA Times, namely by making apps easier to find with a quick access dock at the bottom of the home screen.

The upgrades were designed to address the chief complaint from users: that Facebook takes over the phone at the expense of every other app on it.

Facebook’s director of product, Adam Mosseri, said Chat Heads -– little bubble pictures of friends -– have proved popular but users have complained it’s tough to initiate a conversation. He showed off a new feature that will let users more easily access a buddy list from Home.

According to Engadget, a large portion of Facebook Home’s installs can be attributed to early adopters. At the aforementioned press event, Facebook execs declined to reveal how many active Facebook Home users exist, but did reveal that Home encouraged users to spend 25% more time on Facebook.

Facebook has brought limited Home functionality to iOS with the introduction of Chat Heads into its iOS app, and has talked to Apple about the possibility of bringing additional Facebook Home features to the iPhone in the future.

When Facebook introduced Home, as well as the flagship HTC First device, it felt weird to call it a phone. There’s little to no customization, as there is with most smart phones on the market, and it seems like that’s what turned off users. But the planned updates announced Thursday show that Facebook is planning to turn Home-enabled phones back into, well, phones. However, Facebook Home could just be a guinea pig for the company to develop something better in the future.

Reading through the one-star reviews of Facebook Home on the Google Play store (as Facebook Director of Product Adam Mosseri has been doing), it’s evident that users want more phone, less Facebook:

  • It won’t let you launch the app without clearing your preference for a home screen, the app doesn’t have customizable shortcuts for the main screen, adding apps to the app screen is lame. Just getting to the phone app to make a call takes too many clicks. It’s a phone first people. Needs a lot of work. The app needs to help a phone be more functional and integrated, not take away from the flexibility that android provides.
  • No widget, no fold supportted, it’s not convenient. And there’s only time on the lock screen, no weather, no location. Actually it should provide options for lock screen.
  • No widgets, lack of options for everything else I use my phone for. Good idea but needs LOTS of work.
  • Turned the phone into a facebook gadget. Can’t organize my apps in folders nor any other classification. No shortcut for the dialer. Have to open the apps drawer then select the dialer to make calls.
  • At first I was enjoying it. But it easily gets old because you can’t control the phone as much as you want to. The menu is too limited and can’t display widgets. I know facebook can still develop this into a much better app someday. Keep improving!

A consistent message among these negative reviews is that there’s not much customization possible. Facebook is starting to address that. Thursday, during a whiteboard session at the company’s Menlo Park, Calif. headquarters, Mosseri said that one of Home’s next updates will include a major change: a dock.

Much like most smartphones on the market now, a future version of Facebook Home will include the ability to designate four apps on the home screen. This way, users can have easy access to apps such as Twitter, Maps, and even calling (which is currently in the apps menu).

Also, from reading reviews on Google Play, it’s obvious that many users simply didn’t know what Facebook Home was. It seems like they assumed it was a new and improved Facebook app. It was refreshing to see Facebook take steps toward educating new users, as Mosseri said that future versions of Home will place more of an emphasis on explaining features. It seems inaccurate to call a Facebook Home-enabled phone a phone. It’s more like a device. For people who switched from their iPhone or another Android device, there’s a learning curve involved because the HTC First (and other phones, once Home is enabled), is not a straight-up phone.

It’s important to note that this is Facebook’s first foray into this type of mobile platform. It wasn’t going to be perfect. Expecting top quality simply because it’s Facebook led many users to disappointment. It’s likely that Home is more like a guinea pig than a finished, complete product from Facebook. The company could take what it has learned (and will learn) from Home and develop something bigger and better in the future.

Buzzle: Home & Lifestyle

Last week, the Top 4 of “American Idol,” Season 12, got a reprieve. This week, a delayed judgment day arrived for one of them.

  • The Top 4 kicked off the show by singing “Crazy in Love” from the upcoming film, “The Great Gatsby,” which was actually an older Beyonce song with a 1920s arrangement. They performed with a bevy of professional dancers, doing a Jazz Age-style dance.
  • For this week’s Ford Fiesta Mission, they designed a personalized Fiesta based on the music they love. An artist worked with them to create wraps, one for a “pop and country” car and the other for a “country and soul” car. They looked very artsy yet fun.
  • Then it was time for the recap as well as for Jimmy Iovine’s comments. He felt that Angie Miller’s choice of the Rihanna song “Diamonds” was poor, because it didn’t have “enough meat on it.” But with her second song, he thought it just “wasn’t special enough.” About Amber Holcomb, Jimmy said that the risk with singing a contemporary song is sounding karaoke, and that happened with her 2013 song. About her second selection, “My Funny Valentine,” he said that Amber crushed it, but he didn’t know if this would be enough to save her. Summing up Candice Glover‘s performances, Jimmy said she was “head and shoulders above the rest.” And finally, about Kree Harrison, Jimmy thought that her middle-of-the-road performances this week could hurt her.
  • After a video package about his career since “Idol,” David Cook performed his new single, proving he’s still got it.
  • Will.i.am then performed a song from the “Great Gatsby” soundtrack, which was sort of like hip-hop meets the Jazz Age. It was kind of tuneless, incorporating some famous 1920s melodies. He was joined, then, by a singer/flapper, whose splash of red was the only color on the stage, as both Will.i.am and his backup dancers were in black and white.
  • Next, one of “Idol’s first “rockers,” Constantine Maroulis, got the look-back video. He’s currently starring in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” on Broadway. This was followed by a performance from this week’s mentor, Harry Connick Jr. He sang “Every Man Should Know,” a ballad with the feel of a standard.
  • Before the results, Ryan Seacrest asked Nicki to speak to the Top 4. She called them all superheroes and counseled them, “no tears tonight,” reminding them that this was the beginning of something. She was happy that the best four made it to the top four.
  • Ryan revealed the results were in no particular order. He announced the first person heading home for a visit — and therefore still in the competition — was Angie Miller. Also in the Top 3 was Candice Glover. This left Amber Holcomb and Kree Harrison. Ryan brought them to the center of the stage.
  • After a commercial break, Ryan asked Randy Jackson if this was the right two to be standing there. Randy said it was hard to decide, because he loved them all, and Mariah Carey agreed. Keith Urban reminded everyone that these girls all have audiences now, which will lead to careers. Ryan announced that, after 81 million votes, the third person safe was Kree! This meant it was good-bye to Amber. Then, wiping away tears, Amber got to sing her swan song. She must have been upset, because she really tanked it on some of the notes. It can’t be easy to have to sing after such a disappointment. Afterward, Ryan ushered her father onstage to give her a much-needed hug.
  • Why was it Amber’s time to go? As I mentioned in a previous recap, she has failed to attract the kind of loyal following that the other members of the Top 4 seem to have, which has led to her landing in the bottom two more than once. Despite the frequent rave reviews from the judges, she has simply failed to impress. While her competitors were getting noticed by taking unusual approaches to well-known songs, she often chose songs that were either lesser known or, if they were known, sang them more like a contestant in a beauty pageant than like a true artist. Everyone agrees that she’s pretty and pleasant, but other than her penchant for frozen shrimp, she’s revealed very little about herself that viewers might remember. Her vocal skills are unquestionably good, but in a field this strong, she didn’t do enough to stand out.

Jay-Z Executive Producing Gatsby soundtrack

Jay-Z Executive Producing “Gatsby” soundtrack

Jay-Z will oversee the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film, Gatsby. Luhrmann explained why he wanted to work with the hip-hop superstar, who he was introduced to by Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in the movie.

“[Collaborating with Jay-Z was] a credible and natural fit,” he said. “Fitzgerald was a pioneer, famed and controversial for using the then-new and explosive sound called jazz in his novels and short stories-not just as decoration, but to actively tell story using the immediacy of pop culture. He coined the phrase ’the Jazz Age.’ So, the question for me in approaching Gatsby was how to elicit from our audience the same level of excitement and pop-cultural immediacy toward the world that Fitzgerald did for his audience? And in our age, the energy of jazz is caught in the energy of hip-hop. Not only is Jay-Z a great artist, full stop, but I had heard that he was a great collaborator. Leonardo and I were lucky enough to be present in a recording session over two years ago as Jay-Z was recording ’No Church in the Wild,’ and the collaboration grew from there.”

“As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project,” Jay-Z said. “The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It`s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to Moulin Rouge made it a masterpiece, and Romeo + Juliet’s score wasn’t just in the background; the music became a character. This film`s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.”

Office Stationery

Office stationery supplies are a critical component of coming up with the right ways to run an office.  Without them, there is really no good way to control your office and make sure that you’re running it in an efficient and effective way.

There are a lot of things that control the tone of an office but one of the most important is the overall decor and equipment that the office has inside of it.  It sets the flavor of the entire place and can seriously affect office morale in a big way.  The fortunate thing is that there is a way to do this in a cost-effective manner: get better office stationery for your workers.

This will do a lot for office morale by creating an overall better place to work for the majority of your employees.  Everyone loves a quality pen to write on, and a quality piece of paper to write on as well.  There are not enough ways I can stress this…I’ve had someone actually quit before because they felt they were not taken care of well enough by me and the office supplies that I was – or was NOT – supplying to them.  Don’t make my mistake!
